I began Making masks back in 1987, The Museum of Fine Arts Boston was having their annual fundraiser, the theme was a Venetian masked ball and they were having a mask design contest which I entered and won. Since then I've always gone back to mask making, for a while I even taught a mask making class to "at risk" middle school students. Here's a picture of my prize winning mask..
Memento Mori Phantom Mask
Camouflage I made this mask for a group show at the University of RI Feinstein Campus Gallery in 2016
I have an ongoing fascination with the imitation of nature by the use of man-made materials and the idea of improving on nature by the same means. In this piece I’ve used the format of a mask, something typically used to hide or disguise one’s identity. In creating an elaborate network of representations from nature, I then gilded and bejeweled it so as to create a conspicuous object of opulence. Much of my work involves puns and wordplay which is how the title of this piece came about.
This video shows the mask before it was gold plated and hand enameled.
The enamel work on this piece is meticulously applied, by hand using a toothpick.
